I've been a member of such bands as Flying Colours, Top Brass Jazz Orchestra and Mr B Plays Basie. I was a full time bandleader for Skyline Hotels, having bands in the 'Colony Room' at Skyline Heathrow and the 'Trianon' at Skyline Park Tower. I've worked briefly in theatre pits and also co-led a chamber music group – although, my classical skills have faded somewhat I'm sure they're still lurking in the background.
However, for most of my career I've been a freelance musician and although I've always tried to play as much jazz as possible it does mean that many engagements in various styles had to be undertaken. No problem here - I love it all!
I also managed several tours. The longest was as a member of Engelbert's band and I worked briefly with Jimmy Witherspoon and Larry Williams. Later on I also worked with Johnny Ray.
Of course, like so many of my colleagues, I've done quite a fair amount of teaching.
Now, let's start at the beginning, piano lessons when young at least taught me the layout of the keyboard and where the notes were on the stave. I abandoned quite quickly as I didn't have a very inspiring teacher but this tiny amount of knowledge really helped when I got my first clarinet. This was a very old Simple system and I was totally obsessed with New Orleans Jazz. When I got my hands on a Boehm instrument it changed my whole attitude.
Very soon I was playing tenor sax in a busy dance band. The day job was a thing of the past.
After a short spell working freelance I joined 'Boys Blue' – a soul band. We had a hit in Italy and some footage from a T.V. show in Rome has found its way to youtube. Have a look – it's Boys Blue and the song is 'You got what I want'.
